Lebus Furniture on Facebook

April 16, 2024

A ‘Lebus Furniture’ group on Facebook has just welcomed its 1000th member.

The group was established by Paul Collier - author of the Lebus history books - in late 2019.

Paul says “When I thought about having a Lebus presence on Facebook I wasn’t sure if there would be much interest. I wondered how well known Lebus furniture was. But at least, I thought, the group might be a good way to let people know about the books.”

In the last four years the group has gone from strength to strength. “It’s taken on a life of its own” Paul says “when members post an image of their furniture the questions I get the most are - when was this made and what can you tell me about it?”

From the late nineteenth century and the bulk of the twentieth century Lebus produced upholstery and furniture made of wood for every room in the home …and for every conceivable purpose. It’s fair to say the cabinet making side of the business formed the bulk of its outputs. That said‘ the largest furniture factory in the world’ produced a huge array of upholstery - from beds to ottomans, piano stools to sofas that unfolded into a double bed, fireside chairs to footrests and three piece suites to dining room chairs. “I do get asked about vintage Lebus upholstery that has surfaced too ”Paul says.

There is a movement of individuals and small businesses which upcycle, restore and repurpose furniture in an age guided by recycling and avoiding landfill. “Mid-century Lebus furniture - dressing tables, chests of drawers, wardrobes and sideboards are the most favoured” says Paul. “Everyone comments that vintage Lebus is well made”. With paints, pattern effects, wallpaper, a good clean and sand and specialist wood finishes Lebus furniture, already sixty to seventy years old, is given a new lease of life.”
